Your adventure begins with an overnight stay in Santiago, Chile’s vibrant cultural heart. Filled with museums, beautiful architecture and great restaurants, the city has all the highlights you’d expect from a capital city. With so many attractions and sights to see, you’ll only be limited by time, not choice.

At your own expense, take a historic cable car ride up to the San Cristobal Mountain for views over the city and the Andean glaciers beyond. This is the city’s largest park and home to the National Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Surrounding the park is the trendy Bella Vista neighborhood, a place that’s perfect for hanging out with casual cafes by day and Latin-style bars and clubs by night. Walk to the 18th-century Presidential Palace and the Plaza de Armas in the historic center, where there are enough landmarks to take photos. If you have time, you can go to the fish market at the Mercado Central to taste the classic Chilean seafood stew caldillo de congrio.

If you feel that you need more time to explore the capital, we highly recommend arriving a few days earlier. Make your own arrangements.

You will leave Santiago in the early morning, so be sure to set your alarm. From the airport, you will fly to Punta Arenas, the capital of Chile's southernmost region, located on the Braunschweig Peninsula north of the Strait of Magellan. Originally a penal colony, it flourished during the gold rush and sheep farming era of the 1880s and early 1900s, and is now one of only two low-tax ports in Chile.

The cruise ship Progress is waiting here, eager to begin your Antarctic adventure. Once on board, you will meet the expedition team and cruise staff. Before setting sail, they will hold a health and safety meeting for all guests. As we begin our journey south, head to the observation deck for one last look at Punta Arenas, then sip a drink while you take in the views from the Explorer Lounge and Bar as you turn your sights toward Antarctica.

Long after your epic voyage is over, you’ll be flipping through photos and realising that this is the Strait of Magellan, where your adventure really began. It’s named after Portuguese explorer Fernando de Magallanes, who discovered it in 1520 while leading a Spanish expedition around the world. As you marvel at the stunning scenery around you, imagine Fernando and his crew charting these waters 500 years ago in their rickety ships.

Our cruises to the Falklands are led by a team of professional explorers. You’ll find them to be inspiring teachers and caring hosts, but also true explorers with stories to share. Whether it's about marine biology, Arctic survival, oceanography or photography, you'll soak up their passion at every lecture. You can join them in the lecture hall and science center to learn about the interesting history and fascinating wildlife of the Falkland Islands. If you're interested in art, you can take art classes or even learn how to tie a nautical knot when landing.

You can also spend quality time in the restaurant located at the stern of the ship. You'll find that no matter where you sit at the table, you can gaze at the view outside. There's also something special about soaking in the outdoor hot tub on the 7th deck to enjoy the view of the channel.

The Falklands are perhaps best known for their checkered past. First discovered by the British, settled by the French and Spanish, then fought over by Argentina and Britain during the Falklands War. You’ll understand why these islands are so desirable when you see the natural beauty hidden within them on a three-day exploration.

The windswept green hills are home to large farms that have been family-owned for generations. And the beaches! The white sands and clear waters could easily be mistaken for the Caribbean. You’ll spot penguins grazing alongside sheep, caracaras circling overhead, and geese feeding at the water’s edge.

With nearly 800 islands, there’s plenty to see. Rather than being forced into a set itinerary, we prefer to let your exploration be free and spontaneous. This is an expedition after all! The expedition crew and captain will check the prevailing sea and weather conditions and choose the safest locations for the day. So whether it is Saunders Island, West Point, Carcos Island, or any other location we visit, we make sure that these are the best choices for your adventure.

One place we might visit is Stanley, the capital of East Marvinus (Falkland). It is a great town to explore on foot and a great starting point for any excursions you may choose. In the city center, you might want to browse the local shops and maybe even stop at an English pub to share a beer with a friendly local.

Starting from the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands, we will spend two days sailing to the beautiful South Georgia Island. It is called the Galapagos Islands of the Polar Regions and you can see the impressive and diverse wildlife that inhabits the islands.

During the cruise, you will have plenty of time to chat and communicate with the expedition members and hear what they will tell you about the upcoming trip. They will tell you everything they know about South Georgia Island, including information about the wildlife in the area, polar history, geology, glaciology and the legends of Norwegian whalers.

One of the classic stories is the story of the unfortunate crew of the Endurance, Sir Ernest Shackleton, and their amazing heroic feats. You'll also learn how to make your visit as safe and sustainable as possible, and you can join citizen science projects to help collect data for current scientific research.

If you love wildlife, you’ll love South Georgia. It’s been nicknamed the “Serengeti of the Southern Ocean” and the “Galapagos of the Arctic,” but these islands live up to their reputations. Once here, you’ll understand why South Georgia is a top choice for wildlife photographers from around the world.

Located within the Antarctic ecosystem but far from the sea ice, South Georgia is an ideal home for thousands of breeding penguins and seals. There are many king penguins here, who prefer warmer weather than their cousins ​​in Antarctica, the emperor penguins. South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands have also been identified as Important Bird Areas, home to many seabirds including albatrosses, penguins, petrels, cormorants, gulls and terns.

We are spending five days in South Georgia and plan to make several landings where possible to get you closer to wilderness and wildlife. One place is the settlement of Grytviken, home to the Norwegian Seamen’s Church built in 1913 and the final resting place of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.

Like the Marian Venus (Falkland) Islands, our itinerary is not set in stone. We can take you to all the interesting sights and penguin habitats, but we always adjust our plans according to weather conditions. That's what makes our adventure cruises so unforgettable.

Extended stops in the Marae (Falkland) Islands and South Georgia Island give you time to really immerse yourself in the destination and its wildlife. Now our expedition team will focus your attention on the highlight of the expedition - Antarctica. You will attend a comprehensive lecture and presentation covering the history of polar explorers, the environment, and of course, the wildlife of the region. Throughout the cruise, the expedition team will also collect water samples for you to study under the microscope at the Science Center, allowing you to observe wildlife at a cellular level.

As we get closer to Antarctica, the expedition members will talk about the very strict environmental guidelines and sustainability rules set by the International Association of Antarctic Tour Organisations that we have to follow. Antarctica is a continent dedicated to peace, science and tourism. Any human activity that could disturb the existing natural balance here is not allowed. We don't want to leave anything but footprints, and we don't want to take anything but photos. We even sometimes erase our footprints to prevent penguins from getting stuck in them!

As always, the amenities on the cruise ship are for you to enjoy. If you haven't sweated in the gym or sauna yet, now is your chance. On your way to Antarctica, don’t forget to go up on deck from time to time; spotting your first giant iceberg is always a real highlight of the trip.

Forget everything you've experienced before, Antarctica is in a league of its own. No matter how high your expectations are, Antarctica will not disappoint. With 90% of the world's ice, it is huge in every sense of the word. The only country in the world that is larger is Russia. Under all the ice is actually land, but in some places you have to dig through four kilometers of ice to see it.

When you are standing on the same shore as thousands of penguins. Or if seals appear beside you while you enjoy the optional activity of kayaking among icebergs. You may be so caught up in the excitement that you may not even remember to reach for your camera!

In October and November, whales are rarely seen here. But in December, they can be seen frequently. This is also when the first penguin chicks hatch, which is always a fascinating sight. February and March are peak whale watching times, as the abundance of krill in the waters attracts most whale species, which come for a veritable feeding frenzy.

With less snow you’ll see the clumsy penguin chicks running around. If you’re interested in birds, there are 46 species here, including various petrels, albatrosses and terns.

For the next five days, you can enjoy everything Antarctica has to offer, while our expedition team takes good care of you. You can join them on one of their ice cruises and landings to really explore the icy landscape of this frozen continent. If you’re here early in the season when the snow is good, you might even have the opportunity to go snowshoeing. As always, we did not have a set list of places to visit. We relied entirely on the natural conditions, letting the wind and sea ice guide us in choosing the best landing areas.

At the end of an unforgettable five days in Antarctica, onward we will turn around and take you back north to Drake Strait. This passage is known for its potentially strong winds and currents, but it can also be quiet and still, earning its nicknames "Drake's Shake" and "Drake's Water". But rest assured, even when we experience rough seas, you are in safe hands on our purpose-built expedition ship.

During our crossing, the expedition team will reflect on our experiences, allowing your head to stay in Antarctica for a little while longer. As your expedition cruise draws to a close, this is also the perfect time to look back at the photos you took on board. For anything you've enjoyed doing on the cruise so far, there's time to do it a few more times.

As we leave Drake Strait behind, we enter the scenic Beagle Channel, surrounded by mountains that plunge into icy water. Keep an eye out for the rare, local Peacock's dolphins and other wildlife as we sail through this wild and remote area, virtually undisturbed by humans.

We will arrive in Punta Arenas in the morning and return to civilization. You will be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Santiago, where you will have a second chance to explore the Chilean capital. Or, perhaps you would prefer to extend your vacation by joining a later tour to continue exploring Easter Island, famous for its mysterious giant heads. The choice is yours. But before you do, you can say goodbye to the cruise crew and expedition team.
